Benjamin Stoddert Inquires About Wood "White oak is more important"

1p, measuring 8" x 9.5", Navy Department, Washington, D.C., dated January 21, 1799. Signed "B Stoddert" as Secretary of the Navy and addressed to John Templeman Esq. The letter concerns purchasing wood, possibly for building boats. Stoddart conveys his preferences on types of wood, writing in part:

"…Which Pine is not better - perhaps not so good as Pitch or yellow pine, if the latter be as large. White oak is more important than either - you have not said enough about White oak - and if you please to your observations on that subject - and let me know. Did you see on this trip the Pine swamp belonging to me? I ask, because, I have a letter from [illegible], asserting that it contains the largest white Pines in Maryd - or Penna…" With flattened mail folds, toning, and soiling. Tape strips adheres at the left edge. Paper loss at the left edge from where the wax seal was broken.

Benjamin Stoddert (1744-1813) was the United States' first Secretary of the Navy, serving from 1789 to 1801. During the American Revolution, Stoddert served as a captain in the Pennsylvania cavalry and as secretary to the Continental Board of War. However, he was gravely injured at the Battle of Brandywine and released from military service following his recovery. After the war, he was appointed to Secretary of the Navy by President John Adams, and oversaw the newly established Department of the Navy.
