[ translate ]

Bernard Buffet (French, 1928-1999)Nature Morte au Bol et au Panier Signed and dated 49 top right, oil on canvas.25 1/16 x 31 1/4 in. (63.7 x 79.4cm)PROVENANCE:Collection of Dr. Henry and Mrs. Fannie Levine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.NOTE:The work is referenced in the archives of the Galerie Maurice Garnier. Bernard Buffet attended the École Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris as a teenager during World War II, and had his first solo exhibition before age twenty. Around the time he was painting Table Still Life in 1949, he began gaining wide acclaim and notoriety in France for his unique style and post-war perspective, and for his particular opposition to the abstraction of the art of his generation. The artist even helped found an anti-abstraction group of like-minded painters known as L'Homme Témoin or The Witness Man. Buffet's representational style instead allowed him to express the somber tone and feeling of fragility that permeated post-war Europe through familiar objects, portraits, street scenes and religious subject matter.Buffet's muted, earth-toned palette conjures this post-war despair, and his exploration of the common theme of the still life engages the art historical tradition of "memento mori," tableaux that remind the viewer of the ephemeral nature of human life and its small pleasures, like wine, flowers, fruit and books. In the present painting, Buffet explores this theme in his distinctly graphic, elongated style in a composition that draws out the forms of the basket and fork precariously sitting on the flattened table. Clearly influenced by Cézanne, Buffet continued with this highly recognizable style throughout his career, experimenting with color and richer tones as he matured, and his work has become an important element of museum collections around the world. Table Still Life provides an excellent example of Buffet's work at a pivotal moment in his career, and an ever-relevant reminder of the fragility of life.
