Portrait of Augusta Princess of Wales, by Johann Martin Bernigeroth, copper engraving, the ermine attached to her dress indicates her as a governing regent [1751-1756]; coat of arms, German inscription, "Augusta Prinzessin von Wallis", signed in plate "J.M. Bernigeroth sc. Lips."

Authentic eighteenth century engraving. The COA is included.

Johann Martin Bernigeroth, (1713-1767, Leipzig), was a German engraver and publisher, the son of the engraver Martin Bernigeroth. He took over the workshop of his father in 1733. His brother, Johann Benedikt B. was also an engraver. Reference: Thieme-Becker III, 459-60 AKL IX, 605.

Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (30 November 1719 - 8 February 1772) was Princess of Wales by marriage to Frederick, Prince of Wales. She was one of only four Princesses of Wales who never became queen consort as her eldest son succeeded her father-in-law as George III of the United Kingdom in 1760 rather than her spouse, who had died nine years earlier. Augusta was presumptive regent of Great Britain in the event of a regency between the death of her spouse in 1751, until the majority of her son in 1756, though in the event her father-in-law, George II, lived until 1760.

This engraving comes from a collection of engravings bound by the German art collector "A.L." The finalized collection of hand-numbered engravings is dated 1762 which provides additional warranty that the engravings are authentic and created prior to 1762; auctioned in London, UK.
