DESCRIPTION Set of 2 silver lime boxes weighing 114. 9 g in total. Myanmar (Burma) , 19th century, early 20th century. This oval box is made of solid silver carved with a pretty floral decoration on its top, a classic model in Burma. The body of the box is covered with black lacquer. The symbols on the back of the box are those of the manufacturer, something not common in Burma, and a guarantee of the quality of the work done. Average condition (see photos) , wear of use, traces of lime and the two elements do not fit together completely. 65 x 40 x 50 mm, 86 g. 2) This box of a less common round shape is in repoussé silver with floral decoration and reveals a complex and precise work because this was carried out entirely by hand with rudimentary tools. The work on the partially smooth cover is not common. Good condition but with traces of use (see the pictures) . Height: 56 mm - Diameter: 70 mm - Weight: 28. 9 g JEAN DUMOULIN'S TRAVEL DIARY These boxes traditionally contained lime which, mixed with arek nuts, spices or tobacco, were used to make betel quid. This was common practice in many South East Asian countries and is still very much alive today, especially in Myanmar. It gives users a mild euphoric feeling. From experience, in order to have a serious conversation with someone who uses betel quid, one should make an appointment in the morning rather than late in the day, as listening and understanding may well be lacking at that point. Moreover, this practice affects the teeth and gums of the users, giving them an unmistakable red smile. Will be packaged with care and sent via Bpost with insurance and tracking number.
