DESCRIPTION Set of 3 lime boxes, 2 in silver (total weight of the 2: 168. 5 g) and 1 in metal alloy. Myanmar (Burma) , 19th century and early 20th century. 1) Round box, in solid silver, it features two techniques, embossed and carved silver. The slight irregularities in the piece (for example, the unevenness in the size of the geometric shapes) , visible on the photos, are caused by the stylus used to engrave silver at the time. This technique has now been replaced by modern tools. Decorated with birds. Very beautiful piece, Myanmar (Burma) , 19th century, in good condition but with traces of use. Height: 45 mm Diameter: 80 mm Weight: 116. 1 g 2) This embossed and sculpted metal alloy (copper and silver) octagonal box is beautifully and entirely handcrafted with basic tools. Floral design on the body of the box and with a lion or chinthe on the lid. Good condition, with marks of use (see the pictures) , lime traces. Height: 45 mm Width: 50 mm Length: 65 mm Weight: 88. 9 g 3) Round box, in embossed silver, it is more intricate than it looks and is made with remarkable precision. The symbol on the back of the box is the manufacturer's, which was not common in Myanmar and was a guarantee of the craftsmanship's quality. Good condition but with traces of use (see the pictures) . Height: 53 mm Diameter: 75 mm Weight: 52. 4 g JEAN DUMOULIN'S TRAVEL DIARY: These boxes traditionally contained lime which, mixed with arek nuts, spices or tobacco, were used to make betel quid. This was common practice in many South East Asian countries and is still very much alive today, especially in Myanmar. It gives users a mild euphoric feeling. From experience, in order to have a serious conversation with someone who uses betel quid, one should make an appointment in the morning rather than late in the day, as listening and understanding may well be lacking at that point. Moreover, this practice affects the teeth and gums of the users, giving them an unmistakable red smile. Will be packaged with care and sent via Bpost with insurance and tracking number.
