Bible, in Latin
Johann Zainer, 1480
BIBLE, in Latin. Ulm: Johann Zainer, 29 January 1480.

The only Bible printed at Ulm in the 15th century, by Ulm’s first printer, in a contemporary binding. This Bible, the first to contain printed summaries, is illustrated by large and handsome woodcut initials and decoration imitating illuminated books. Zainer was likely the brother of Gunther Zainer, first printer at Augsburg, both innovators in printed book illustration. “There are many beautiful woodcut capitals and pieces of border decoration in Johann Zainer’s books,” although by the later 1480s he had fallen on hard times and seems to have been forced to sell some of his woodblocks, which begin to appear in the works of Knoblochtzer, Meydenbach, and Hupfuff (Hind). Zainer is also known to have been a rather careless printer—making his work a rich source of information on the early printing process as revealed by his many errors. HC 3079*; BMC II 526; BSB-Ink B-438; GW 4242; Bod-inc B-276; Goff B-567; ISTC ib00567000. See also Arthur Hind, An introduction to a history of woodcut (1963), and Claire Bolton, The Fifteenth-century Printing Practices of Johann Zainer, Ulm, 1473-1478 (2016).

Royal folio (413 x 279mm). 440 leaves (of 441, without blank dd8). A few larger red brushwork intials, red and blue Lombard capitals, red paragraph marks and capital strokes, large woodcut initials and decoration, woodcut of Saint Jerome on first text leaf (a few torn away corners and chips, one affecting woodcut decoration; dampstaining in gutter and lower margin, some light dustsoiling at ends). Contemporary blindstamped calf over wooden boards, blue cloth index tabs (rebacked, lacking straps and catchplates, gouge on rear board). Provenance: Brno, Carthusian monastery of the Holy Trinity (inscriptions, dissolved in 1782) – Princes of Liechtenstein (bookplate) – acquired from H.P. Kraus, New York, 20 November 1957.
