Bishop of Durham.- A document signed by Tobias Matthew, in Latin, relating to a case brought to the Bishop’s court by Richard Bellassis against Christopher Wall, the document is a notice of pardon for an unlawful seizure of land in Stanhope and Greenhead: “WE, by our particular grace and for a certain fine paid to us into our Hanaper, have pardoned, remitted and released […] WE DO NOT WISH that the aforesaid Christopher Wall, his heirs or assigns, should by reason of the foregoing be interfered with, molested, disturbed in any way or oppressed.”, ink on parchment, elaborate floral initials, soiled, bishop’s wax seal attached, 8th of July, 1596. *** Tobias Matthew gained favour under Elizabeth I and was appointed Bishop of Durham in 1595. He was later promoted to Archbishop of York, by James I.
