Blaeu Terrestrial Globe

[ translate ]

Blaeu, WIllem Jansz (1571-1638).
Terrestrial Globe.
Amsterdam, 1602 (But after 1621).
Height (In Stand) 21" x 13" diameter.
A Very Rare Blaeu Table Terrestria Globe.
Blaeu's terrestrial globes were highly valued and were much in demand, because of the care with which they had been prepared, because of the efforts to give the latest information on discoveries, and because of the loxodromic lines which made them of special value to navigators.
The globe has four cartouches in all, one of which is in North America and the rest either partially or completely in the southern continent. The globe includes a limited number of non-cartographic elements. The continents sometimes bear representations of animals, both real and mythical such as drawings of folkloric groups in Central Asia (nomads), Brazil (cannibals), and Patagonia (a giant). Ships and sea monsters are drawn in the oceans. The largest scene is found in the Pacific Ocean: there we see Neptune on a seahorse surrounded by other sea gods.
