[ translate ]

A lovely blue and white porcelain plate / dish, decorated with a traditional scrolling lotus pattern, China late Ming - early Qing dynasty (Ching) 17th - 18th Century. The plate is part of the famous "Nanking Cargo" from the ship that sank in the South China Sea on January 3, 1752. It was recovered in 1985 by Captain Michael Hatcher and sold off by Christies Amsterdam that same year.It is in excellent antique condition showing only general signs of wear with no chips or cracks. it has a diameter of approximately 6.5 inches (16.51 cm). The underside show remains of where it was salvaged from the shipwreck (it does not detract, on the contrary it adds to its authenticity). The plate has been finely mounted so as to be hung. The underside of the plate has been signed with characters that refer to the owner of the plate and not the maker. It was common for such markings to be found on plates such as this in order to know who it came from after the items had been lent to neighbors (who would be short of porcelain when they arranged events such as a wedding).
