Zwei Tage nach dem Tod des Attentäters schreibt der Verfasser des vorliegenden Briefes, wohl ein Student der Princeton University, ausführlich an seine Schwester Annie, schildert in poetischen Worten die Annehmlichkeiten von Wetter und Natur ("the wind blows softly in at the window; the noise of the frogs, way off in the sewages, down by the railroad sounds clearly through the still air") und verliert auch einige Worte über die Universität ("Princeton is at the best a dull place and college life is such a mixture of laziness and work, that I often feel as if I should be glad when I have some real occupation to work at"), bevor er auf die neueste Nachricht von Booth zu sprechen kommt: "... Ive got the news last evening of the capture and death of Booth. poor fool! He died as he lived and his end was in keeping with the act that ruined him. Murder will act. I was in hopes that they would have caught him alive. But perhaps it is better as it - is; a long trial and ultimate execution might have been satisfied our feelings of vengeance; but he has got his deserts and let him be forgotten. I was sorry that Father did not succeed in seeing the body of the President; several of my friends here saw it, but I do not think that the moments glance that they obtained gave them much satisfaction ...". - Der aus einer berühmten Schauspieler-Dynastie stammende Booth hatte als fanatischer Südstaatler am 14. April während einer Vorstellung des Ford-Theaters in Washington den ohne Leibwächter anwesenden Lincoln in dessen Loge von hinten erschossen und war geflohen. Einige Tage später wurde er entdeckt und von einem Polizisten ebenfalls durch einen Schuß getötet.
