Breathtaking Roman 23K+ Gold & Glass Earrings (pr)

[ translate ]

Roman, possibly the Levant/Syria, ca. 1st century CE. A stunning matched pair of Roman 23K+ karat gold earrings with glass inlays and glass danglers that complement the shimmering gold with beautiful pink and iridescent azure blue, violet purple, fuschia pink, and aqua hues. These drop earrings each present an elegant design comprised of two sections joined via hinges so that the lower section moves gracefully to and fro. The upper element of each earring presents a circular form created from gold sheet with a circular glass inlay framed by a raised bezel adorning the front face and two pink glass danglers below. Attached to this is a teardrop shaped element, also made from gold sheet, adorned by teardrop shaped glass inlays set in raised bezels with four pink glass danglers below. The french hooks attached to the upper circular sections have survived the tests of time, making these lovely earrings not only beautiful but also wearable. Total weight: 13.2 grams. Size: 2" L x .875" W (5.1 cm x 2.2 cm); 2.3" L (5.8 cm) including hook; gold quality: 98%, equivalent to 23K+

Provenance: private Dunn collection, Coral Springs, Florida, USA, acquired in the 1990s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#151476
Condition Report: Small losses to the lower edges of one of the teardrop shaped glass inlays. A tiny inherent bubble to the other teardrop shaped glass inlay. Glass inlays have developed gorgeous rainbow iridescence. The pink glass danglers show expected age wear with some abrasions and deposits, but still present strong forms. Hinges between the upper and lower elements of each earring are in excellent shape, enabling the lower sections to move nicely. French hooks show minor bending, but are in overall very good condition. Gold forms show slight surface wear but are generally excellent and have developed a lovely warm patina; indentations to bezels may have been an intentional design element
