Wessex, Eadmund (939-946), penny, Floral Type, + EADMVND REX around small cross, rev. EADVVEAR, trefoil-headed flower between leaf sprays, bar with annulets at groundline above, sideways reversed S below, wt. 1.89gms (cf. N.694; SCBI 34 for obv.; cf. N.703; SCBI 34, 47 for rev.), bent but otherwise undamaged, obverse about very fine, reverse with strong original gilding, extremely fine
Very rare; discovered in 2014 near Bishop Waltham, Hampshire;
This coin is a close copy of Edward the Elder’s Floral Type which may have been struck by the Gloucester moneyer Ædelmod. While of comparable style, this piece has close affinities with Eadmund’s ‘Horizontal Rosette’ variants of Mercian origin;
Only two moneyers are known for these rare coins – Eofermund and Eadweard;
The distinctive feature is the sideways reversed S replacing the more usual rosette symbol.
