Bucket - Tar pit - Oak - Harpist tar bucket

[ translate ]

Very nice and rare Harpuis or tar bucket or pit from the early to mid 19th century. A tar pit was used on wooden ships and in shipyards to tar the hull and other parts so that it was better protected against the elements. In addition to tar, Harpuis is also used, this is a boiled mixture of resin and linseed oil that was used in shipbuilding on masts and spars to prevent rot and woodworm.

The tar bucket is conically knotted in shape, cut, with three metal wrought hoops and a handle. The bucket is in good used condition. It has some old woodworm holes, but these are no longer active.
The conical shape with the wide bottom of the bucket provided greater stability and prevented the bucket from easily tipping over on a moving deck.
Please see the photos for the condition.
