Byobu, Folding screen - Paper, Wood - Medium-sized six panel byobu-screen with a Rinpa style painting of birds in a chrysanthemum garden - Japan - Late Edo period

Medium-sized impressive 6 panel old byobu-screen with a serene continuous painting in Rinpa-style of different birds scurrying around a multi-coloured chrysenthemum (kiku) garden in full bloom. On the left side you can see a pair of kingfishers, one flying high searching for its partner who is resting between blooming flowers. On the right side you can see a similar charming scene between a pair of sparrows. The screen has a blue brocade border with a mokko-shaped pattern. The black wooden frame with original hardware to protect the corners. The screen has some imperfections and traces of age and wear. On some places some wear of the gofu layer. Some repairs to the back. Brocade from later date. Please check the pictures. The screen is approximately 150 - 200 years old. The Rinpa School was a key part of the Edo period revival of indigenous Japanese artistic interests described by the term yamato-e. Paintings, textiles, ceramics, and lacquerwares were decorated by Rinpa artists with vibrant colors applied in a highly decorative and patterned manner. Favored themes, which often contained evocative references to nature and the seasons, were drawn from Japanese literature, notably The Tale of Genji, The Tales of Ise, and Heian-period poems composed by courtiers. (From the MET museum) . These kind of room-dividers are light in weight and can also be easily mounted flat on a wall and presented as one piece of art.
