Very detailed and remarkable large six-panel byôbu 屏風 (room divider) with a continuous Kanô School-style painting on gold leaf depicting scenes of different famous places in Japan during the four seasons. On the top left there is a Japanese traditional style shopping street, where a sign reads ‘Miyajima’ 宮嶌, referring to a small island near Hiroshima, which is famous for the Itsukushima Shrine 厳島神社 (in the water on the right) with its iconic ‘floating’ torii gate. The streets and water are buzzling with tourists wanting to view these remarkable places. In the lower middle, high above blooming sakura 桜 (cherry blossom) , supported by its tall pillars the Kiyomizu-dera 清水寺 is depicted. A Buddhistic temple in the east of Kyôto 京都 on the foothills of Mount Otawa. On the right of this complex are large stairs leading to the waterfall ‘Otowa no taki’ 音羽の滝, where visitors drink for health, longevity, and success in studies. All these scenes are bordered by shiny dense golden clouds. The panels are surrounded by two silk borders, a thin golden one, and a wide blue brocade one with a flower motif. The screen is protected by a black lacquer wooden frame with its original protective hardware. Considering the age, which is approximately 120-220 years old, it is in a very good condition, with only some minor traces of age and wear. Please see the photos for a condition reference. These kind of room dividers are light in weight and can also be easily mounted flat on a wall and presented as one piece of art. Total width: 379. 6 cm (2 x 64. 6 cm, 4 x 62. 6 cm) ; Height: 172. 8 cm. The Kanô school (狩野派, Kanô-ha) is one of the most famous schools of Japanese painting. The Kanō school of painting was the dominant style of painting from the late 15th century until the Meiji period which began in 1868, by which time the school had divided into many different branches. The school began by reflecting a renewed influence from Chinese painting, but developed a brightly coloured and firmly outlined style for large panels decorating the castles of the nobility which reflected distinctively Japanese traditions, while continuing to produce monochrome brush paintings in Chinese styles.
