Isaac II, Angelus (1185-1195) , Aspron Trachy. Weight: 3. 9 g. Diameter: 20 mm. Mint: Constantinople. Obverse: Description: the archangel Saint Michael, bust facing front, half-length figure, beardless, with nimbus and winged, wearing the loros, holding a sceptre in his right hand. REVERSE: Description: crowned bust of Isaac II standing facing front, half-length figure, wearing the loros, holding a cruciform sceptre in his right hand and the akakia in his left hand blessed by the archangel Saint Michael with nimbus, wearing a military outfit, holding a sceptre in his left hand, blessing Isaac II with his right hand. History: Isaac is a descendant of Alexios I Komnenos wives. After the assassination of Andronikos I Komnenos following the capture of Thessaloniki in 1185, Isaac II inherited a decomposing empire. Caught between the Bulgarian power and the expansionist aims of the Crusaders, he was finally deposed and blinded by his elder brother Alexios III Angelos Komnenos. Eight years later, after the capture of Constantinople by the Venetians, Isaac II regained the throne linked to Alexios IV Angelos, his son. They were finally both murdered by the rabble on 28 January 1204. On 12 April 1204, the Crusaders captured Constantinople, and ransacked and looted the city.
