CARLO CERESA | PORTRAIT OF BARONE IGNAZIO DE PIZZIS, FULL-LENGTH

[ translate ]

Property from a European Private Collection
CARLO CERESA
San Giovanni Bianco 1609-1679 Bergamo
PORTRAIT OF BARONE IGNAZIO DE PIZZIS, FULL-LENGTH

inscribed on the reverse: Barone Pizzis...
oil on canvas
83¾ by 51¾ in.; 212.7 by 131.4 cm.

Condition Report:
The canvas is lined and stable in its stretcher. The canvas is slightly separated from the frame at all four edges. A bold portrait image reads well beneath clear varnish. Frame abrasion is visible along the right edge, and visible retouching to the top edge creates irregular texture but neither is distracting. A fold or seam in the canvas runs vertically the length of the canvas about 16 inches from left edge but is not distracting. Under UV inspection, a reverse-C-shaped repair is visible to the right of the man's arm, measuring about 12 inches high and 5 inches wide. Another possible old repair running vertically along the right side is visible measuring from the man's shoulder to hips. 2 small repairs: one to the left of the man's proper right arm and one where his yellow garment meets his trousers, are visible. Retouching is apparent along the top edge, along the vertical seam/fold, throughout the background and curtain in areas of shadow, and small retouches are visible in the shoes and lower costume but retouching is largely absent from the face and hair. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame.
