8vo, 2 volumes, engraved title-page in part I, first complete edition in English, translated by Thomas Shelton, second edition of the first part and first edition of the second part, printer's device on letterpress title of second part, woodcut headpieces and decorative initials, contemporary calf, rebacked, spine slightly chipped, new endpapers, edges of binding worn, hinges repaired, title page to first part in photo-facsimile, lacking two further leaves of preliminaries (including initial blank), without the additional engraved title to part 2, lacking last two leaves of text and final blank leaf (2K2--2K4; 2K2 partially present but torn and lacking all but a few words), first few leaves soiled and slightly torn, some slight browning

THE FIRST COMPLETE EDITION IN ENGLISH OF THE FIRST MODERN NOVEL AND ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL WORKS OF LITERATURE OF ALL TIME. The first part had been first published in 1612, with Shelton executing the translation in only 40 days. "The signs of haste in the translation ... do not hide his verve, command of Spanish, and knowledge of Spain".
