Watercolor on cream wove paper, 1894. 507x356 mm; 20x14 inches. Signed, dated and inscribed "Isle of Shoals" in watercolor, lower left recto.This watercolor will be included in Kathleen M. Burnside and Stuart P. Feld's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.Ex-collection Robert Hartshorne, New Jersey; thence by descent to the current owner, private collection, New Jersey.Robert Hartshorne came from a prominent New Jersey family. He assembled a notable collection that included prints by artists such as James A. M. Whistler (1834-1903) (Hartshorne was advised by Edward G. Kennedy, Kennedy & Co., New York, and owned many rare states), Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) and Edgar Degas (1834-1917). He was also an avid collector of first editions, and his library was sold after his death on October 29-20, 1945 through Parke-Bernet, New York. A significant part of the rest of his collection was also sold through Parke-Bernet on January 23, 1946. More recently, an important sale of over 70 Mary Cassatt prints and drawings that had passed to his descendants was held at Christie's in New York on October 30-31, 2007.
