CIRCLE OF GIOVANNI DI NICCOLÒ DE LUTERO, CALLED DOSSO DOSSI
VENUS DISCOVERING THE BEAUTY OF PSYCHE

inscribed with the monogram of Prince Wenzel Anton von Kaunitz-Rittberg, lower right
oil on canvas
Canvas: 55.8 x 85.9 cm.; 21⅞ x 33¾ in.
Framed: 100 x 70.2 cm.; 39 3/8 x 27 5/8 in.

Condition Report:
The canvas has a fairly old relining, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. There is evidence of wear throughout, particularly on the left-hand side of the composition. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals spot retouchings throughout, largely in the figures and in the sky, upper right. Retouching in the sky, upper left, has been used to disguise an adjustment to the position of the figure's raised arm, which was previously bent further towards the right. The painting is in overall fair condition.

Provenance:
Prince Wenzel Anton Von Kaunitz-Rittberg (1711-94), Vienna;

Anonymous sale, Vienna, Dorotheum, 27-29 March 1933, lot 39 (as Benvenuto Tisi, called Garofalo);

With E. and A. Silberman Galleries, Vienna;

Anonymous sale, Zurich, Schuler, 19 June 2015, lot 3301 (as Follower of Garofalo), where acquired.
