He enlisted as a 2nd Class Air Mechanic in the Royal Flying Corps in October 1915. Furrell was posted to 15 Squadron at Lealvilliers in November 1916, and advanced to 1st Class Air Mechanic in September 1917. He transferred to the R.A.F. in April 1918, and was remustered as L.A.C. Wireless Operator the following year. Furrell transferred to the R.A.F.
