Canaanite Copper Axe / Mace Head - Zoomorph Form

[ translate ]

Ancient Near East, the Levant, Canaanite, Middle Bronze Age, ca. 2000 to 1800 BCE. A distinctive cast copper axe head with an abstract zoomorphic form. The butt end of the blade looks like a long-billed avian face with a rounded bill and two hooked crests. The blade itself is long, flat, and turned down at its tip. The patina on this example is lovely, with encrusted blue-green elements. This item was probably made only to be ceremonial or given as a funerary offering, and would never have been sharpened. Size: 6" W x 3.25" H (15.2 cm x 8.3 cm); 5.75" H (14.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Zaveloff collection, Lakewood, New Jersey, USA; ex-Hadji Baba Museum, Jerusalem, Israel, early 1970

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
