Canosan Hellenistic Polychrome Figure of Woman w/ TL

Magna Graecia, Apulia, Canosan, late Hellenistic period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. A hollow-molded pottery figure accentuated with thick layers of white, red, and yellow pigment. Depicted is a dignified woman wearing a flowing himation while holding a petite item in one hand and leaning against a cylindrical pillar. Her downcast visage bears almond-shaped eyes beneath heavy lids, a slender nose flanked by puffy cheeks, full lips above a rounded chin, and a coiffure of curly red locks beneath a thick headband. Size: 2.9" W x 5.2" H (7.4 cm x 13.2 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

Provenance: The Dere Family Collection, New York, USA, assembled 1970's-2000's; ex-La Reine Margot French Collection, acquired in 1990's

Condition Report: Loss to right arm as shown. Nicks to base, legs, pillar, body, and head, with softening to some finer details, fading and chipping to original pigmentation, and heavy encrustations. Nice earthen deposits and great traces of remaining pigment throughout. Two TL drill holes: one beneath base along interior periphery, and one on back of pillar.
