Carlo Mollino (attributed to), a glass table gong with brass and leather hammer, on a brass 'U' form stand 45cm high

Provenance: From the apartment above the Lutrario club, Turin with interiors by Carlo Mollino; Lamberty Art & Design, selected items from the storages.

Italian architect, designer and photographer Carlo Mollino (Turin, 1905-1973) was an artistic polymath, whose interests ranged from race car driving to the occult. In addition to reflecting the artist's eclecticism and innovative vision, Mollino's designs are known for ergonomic detail and meticulous craftsmanship. His works are held in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London among others. Items by Mollino were sold during the recent 'Thinking Italian Design' auction at Christie's London, 17/10/2018. A side chair designed by the artist achieved upwards of 500,000GBP, illustrating the enduring appeal of Mollino's designs.

Among the interiors designed by Mollino was the illustrious Lutrario club in Turin. The club started out as a summer ballroom, founded in the 1920s by entertainment entrepreneur Attilio Lutrario, in a former working men's club next to Porta Dora station. Over the following decades, the club would grow to include a cinema, and would host performances by Italy's most famous musicians. Carlo Mollino was given the commission to transform the interiors of the club in 1959
