Cartier was founded in 1847 in Paris by Louis-François Cartier, who in 1899 handed over to his three sons. They would establish the company internationally, making Cartier a favourite among the elite. Named 'King of Jewellers', the brand was quick to turn its attention to watches.

Cartier began to offer their clientele functional jewelled objects in the first decade of the 20th century and was credited with greatly contributing to bringing back the elegance and craft of watchmaking. The firm capitalised on the fashion for ladies' flat pocket-watches by producing myriad examples designed to be worn as necklaces and brooches and won admirers across Europe, Russia and the USA. Heavily influenced by the 18th century Louis XVI style, they often demonstrated the highly skilled art of ornate guilloché enamel decoration.
