Casas Grandes Polychrome Vessel Avian Form

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua, Carretas, Casas Grandes, ca. 1060 to 1340 CE. A splendid pottery vessel in the form of a bird where the body bows outward and inward and resolves to a slightly turned rim to produce an elegant silhouette, all sitting upon a round yet stable base. Boasting hues of russet and black on a light orange ground, the ancient jar is skillfully hand-painted with triangular and checkered decorations. The petite head of the charming avian creature protrudes outward on one side, presenting large, annular eyes and a pointed beak, while a tapered tail projects from the opposite end. The rim has been pierced with 4 drill holes, allowing the charming vessel to be suspended. Size: 11" L x 7.3" W x 5" H (27.9 cm x 18.5 cm x 12.7 cm)
