Catharina da Costa (British 1679 - 1756)
Portrait of a child holding a basket of chicks
Watercolour and bodycolour on card, oval
4.8cm (5¾ in.) high
Parcel gilt wood frame
Provenance:
Sale, Bonhams, Fine Portrait Miniatures, 23 May 2007, lot 37
The present lot compares closely with a signed and dated portrait of 'Don Alvero Lopes Suasso', (1718) in the Jewish Historical Museum, Amsterdam.
Condition Report:
The card appears to have been extended at both the left and lower edges and this is largely visible in the online illustration. There are a number of surface scratches to the card, most notably to the upper right quadrant. Some light spots of surface dirt throughout. Light fading, most notably to the sitter's face. Light rubbing and abrasions to the framing edges but this is barely noticeable. Unexamined out of glazed frame.
The frame with some surface dirt under the glaze. Nicks, surface scratches, chips, cracks (verso) and losses throughout. Condition Report Disclaimer
