Cavalry Hero Col. Richard H. Rush Signed Military Referral

1 partially printed page, 5" x 7.75", signed "R.H. Rush." Dated September 26, 1863. The document acknowledges the forwarding of a referral made by Major Clark, Acting Provost Marshal General of Massachusetts, for Captain Hiram A. Oakman, 7th MA Volunteers. Oakman had applied for a position in the Invalid Corps.

Accompanying Rush's referral are four other documents recommending Oakman for the position. Along with the original transmittal envelope, addressed to Oakman, postdated Boston, November 25, 1863, from the Executive Department of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Richard H. Rush (1825-1893) emigrated from London, England, and during the Civil War he commanded the 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Because of the unit's use of 9-foot lances, they became known as "Rush's Lancers." Rush served with distinction as he led the 6th Pa at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Brandy Station.

All with flattened mail folds and light toning and foxing. Boldly signed by Rush. Envelope has usual wear and soiling.
