Center of Table in Bronze Italian School 19th Century - Bronze - First half 19th century

[ translate ]

Bronze centrepiece. Italian school. 19th century. Large dimensions. Bronze with an excellent embossing, silver plated and chiselled. Diameter: 70 cm Approximate weight 7 kg. Italian school centrepiece in embossed bronze from the 19th century, representing the Abduction of the Sabine women magnificently embossed in its seat, and with subtle vegetal intertwining between dragons and grotesque in the eaves. On the circular surface an intense struggle develops between equestrian soldiers, muscular men on foot and women who defend themselves against the aggressors. The dramatic foreshortening and the sculptured turned bodies, together with the tunics falling in expressive drapes, beautifully chiselled the details, make up a circular frieze of excellent technique. The crowded figures and the variety of gestures and attitudes enrich the narrative crossings. The mythological legend tells that, by mandate of Rómulo, the Romans invited to the tribe of the Sabines to a banquet to kidnap their women, since they lacked them in the first times of the foundation of Rome. At its centre, a tondo contains a captured character with his hands tied behind his back. In the eaves, clusters intertwined in capricious shapes alternate with dragons whose serpentine bodies are confused with ivy. A profile projection wreathed closes the set.
