Charles Jervas (also Jarvis; c.1675-1739) was an Irish portrait painter, translator, and art collector of the early 18th century. Painting portraits of the British intellectuals, among them such personal friends as Jonathan Swift and the poet Alexander Pope, Charles Jervas became a popular artist often referred to in the works of literary figures of the period. Jervas gave painting lessons to Pope at his house in Cleveland Court, St James's, which Pope mentions in his poem, To Belinda on the Rape of the Lock, written 1713, published 1717 in 'Poems on Several Occasions'. Pope's verse Epistle to Mr Jervas, written circa 1715, was published in the 1716 edition of John Dryden's 1695 translation of Fresnoy's Art of Painting (Charles Alphonse Du Fresnoy's De arte graphica, 1668).

With his growing reputation, Jervas succeeded Kneller as Principal Painter in Ordinary to King George I in 1723, and continued to live in London until his death in 1739.

Jervas' translation of Cervantes' novel Don Quixote, published posthumously in 1742 as being made by Charles "Jarvis" - because of a printer's error - has since come to be known as "the Jarvis translation". Jervas was first to provide an introduction to the novel including a critical analysis of previous translations of Don Quixote. It has been highly praised as the most accurate translation of the novel up to that time, but also strongly criticized.

Antoine Johannot, known commonly as Tony Johannot (1803-1852), was a French engraver, illustrator and painter. He was born in Offenbach am Main, Germany, where the family had fled after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. The two older brothers of Tony, Charles and Alfred, were engravers, and Alfred also worked as a painter and draughtsman. Tony learnt engraving from his brothers and helped Alfred produce illustrations of books by James Fenimore Cooper and Walter Scott. Tony came to prefer wood-engraving, but resumed etching in 1845. He became an illustrator much prized for his elegance, his diversity, and the lively character of his drawings, which were converted to engravings either by himself or by such artists as Jacques Adrien Lavieille, Emile Montigneul, and Alfred Revel. He was praised by Theophile Gautier, "Tony Johannot can be called, without fear of contradiction, the king of illustration."

Provenance:

Edmund Kelly (1851-1909) was a lawyer, political reformer, writer and sociologist, born in France to American parents. In 1892 Kelly overturned the Tammany machine that wrought corruption in New York City, and founded The City Club of New York to promote effective and honest government.

Kelly attended King's School, in Sherborne, Dorsetshire, England. Then he came to New York with his parents, in 1868, and studied at Columbia College, obtaining the degree of Bachelor of Laws in 1877. Kelly's professional career began in the office of Coudert Brothers, New York City, for which firm he went to Paris several years later as its representative. In 1883 he obtained his License en Droit from the École de Droit and opened an office of his own, continuing his practice there until 1891. During this period, and again, from 1899 to 1907, he represented a number of well-known American corporations, among them the American Contracting & Dredging Company, which worked the east coast of the Panama Canal, and the Equitable Life Assurance Society. He was also counsel for the United States Embassy.

Kelly was known as the writer of numerous books on religion, unemployment and politics. The most important of his published writings included: Evolution and Effort (1895); Government, or Human Evolution (2 vols., 1900-1901); A Practical Program for Working Men (1906); The Elimination of the Tramp (1908); and Twentieth Century Socialism (1910).
