Charles Avery, Scottish b.1973- Status Quo, 2010; mixed media sculpture, bronze, gouache and paper wood, 30x66x28cm (2)(ARR) Provenance: Doggerfisher, Edinburgh, where purchased by the present owner in 2011 Note: Charles Avery is a contemporary Scottish artist whose work is not confined to a single medium, but instead consists of a range of media, including drawing, sculpture, and painting. Much of Avery’s work is centred around the construction of an imaginary island which he has continued to ‘document’ throughout his career, suggesting the nature of artwork as permanently evolving, and the act of engaging with the artwork as an active experience both for the viewer and the artist. Solo exhibitions of Avery’s work have been held at the Vistamarestudio in Milan, GRIMM Galleries in New York and Amsterdam, the Ingleby Gallery in Edinburgh, and the GEM Museum for Contemporary Art in The Hague. He has also participated in group exhibitions at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and as part of the Venice and Istanbul Biennales. His work is currently in the collections of the Tate and the Arts Council England in London, the Edinburgh City Art Centre, and the Kunstmuseum in The Hague, amongst others.
