Charles Darwin Signed "The Descent of Man", First Issue Printings, Two Volumes with Gorgeous Signature Laid in

John Murray, London, 1871. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine, First Edition. First Printing First Issue with gorgeous Charles Darwin Signature Laid in, 3.25" x 2". A beautiful (2) volume set in the original green cloth bindings with unfaded gilt tiles to the spine, and with the original coated black end papers present. The Descent of Man was issued in two paper sizes, and the present is the preferred “larger paper” format (5 mm taller). ALL the First Issue points present in both volumes including the publisher's 16 pages of advertisements dated January 1871 in each volume. The first word is "Transmitted" on page 297 in Volume 1 that was changed to "When" on later editions, and the errata on the verso of the title leaf of Volume II has seventeen errata lines for Volume I, eight lines for Volume II. Both books are bound in the ORIGINAL publisher's green cloth with minor wear to the edges. The bindings are tight with NO cocking or leaning and the original black endpapers are present in both books. The pages are clean with NO writing, marks, foxing or bookplates in the books. Housed in a superb slip case with green leather raised band spines and gilt titles. Slip case size of 8.25" x 6.25".

An extraordinary First Edition, First Issue set in collector's condition, with a desirable full autograph signature, very rarely found in such superlative state.

Note: The only similar set we see available for sale is listed for $35,000 and that set does not include a signed card by Darwin!
