Che Guevara Superb DS and Vintage Photo

A Spanish language document signed by Marxist revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara (1928-1967) as "che" at center bottom recto above his printed signature as "Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara / Ministro." Accompanied by a vintage black and white photograph of Che Guevara dressed in his trademark drab fatigues standing in front of a microphone, ca. late 1950s. Provenance: From the collection of Ron Hoskins, assassinologist.

The document signed in Havana, Cuba on July 4, 1963 pertains to the judicial hearing of an unidentified worker who "has appeared to give a free statement to the Sr Chief of the National Police so that by a member of the body he will be conducted and presented in this court to a first hearing." Countersigned by Dr. Oscar Pina Hernandez as "O.H. Pina" at center recto. Contemporary sources indicate that Dr. Oscar Pina Hernandez served as a Municipal Judge in Western Havana in the early 1960s. The printed half sheet is stamped with a "Mini[s]terio de Industria / Republica de Cuba" seal at lower left. The reverse of the document, date docketed five days later on July 9, 1963, indicates that the case was resolved. Age toning, isolated edge darkening, and scattered staple holes found along the left edge. Else very good to near fine. 8.375" x 6.375."

The vintage photograph of Che Guevara is pencil-inscribed in Spanish verso: "Ernesto Guevara (che) / Cmdte del Ejecito Rebel de Cuba" [trans: Commander of the Little Rebel Army of Cuba]. Expected wear including an area of loss affecting Che's right shoulder. Else very good to near fine. 4.75" x 7.125."

Che Guevara was a young Argentine doctor whose experiences traveling extensively throughout the Caribbean as well as Latin and South America radicalized him politically. He joined the July 26th Movement of the Cuban revolutionaries Raul and Fidel Castro after meeting the brothers in 1955. Guevara became not only a Comandante, or military commander, of the Cuban rebels, but also their intellectual, spiritual, and tactical leader. Guevara eventually held many roles in the new republican government after the U.S. backed Fulgencio Batista regime was overthrown in 1959. Guevara was appointed Minister of Industry in 1961, and in this role, he attempted to industrialize and centralize the Cuban economy while redistributing labor and emphasizing agricultural production.
