Chimu Gourd Vessel w/ Pyro-Engraved Motifs

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A fine vessel formed from a hollow gourd with a round base, a spherical body. A tapering conical neck, and a petite mouth which perhaps at one time held a lid. The orange-brown exterior surface is decorated with dense pyro-engraved motifs, with a repeating register of concentric diamonds along the neck, and vertical bands of repeating wave-form motifs along the lower body. Size: 2.4" W x 4.2" H (6.1 cm x 10.7 cm); 4.4" H (11.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

Condition Report: Original lid missing. Vessel has lucite ring adhered to base which can likely be removed. Minor abrasions to neck and body, with light fading to areas of pyro-engraved motifs, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits within interior. Old inventory number written in white ink on base.
