Chimu Pottery Stirrup Vessel - Figure w/ Tump Line

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessel with a seated man holding a vessel to the back of his head via a tump line. The inverted piriform body rests atop a flared, discoid foot and has a stirrup-shaped handle arching up the back towards the gently tapered spout. The man sits with arms holding the tump line against his forehead, and his stylized face displays incised almond eyes, a bulky nose, and deep nasolabial folds. Held in the tump line is a gourd-shaped vessel with a spout that doubles as the larger vessel's spout. Size: 3.625" W x 6.625" H (9.2 cm x 16.8 cm)

Condition Report: Repair to proper left arm, with stabilization to hairline fissures across front of foot and body, and restoration to curved section of handle, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines; bottom of repaired arm still has visible chipping. Minor abrasions to body, figure, and foot, with chipping to top rim of spout. Nice remains of pigment throughout.
