China: Tibet. Rupee, ND (1902-1911). PCGS AU55.
An appealing example of the celebrated Tibetan Rupee series, struck during the final years of independent Tibetan coinage influenced by the circulation of British Indian rupees throughout the Himalayan region. This piece presents considerably finer than typically encountered, retaining strong detail across both sides and displaying an attractive light silver-grey patina with subtle golden undertones.
The obverse portrait remains well preserved for the grade. Facial features are clearly defined, while the intricate robe decoration, beaded jewellery, and distinctive ceremonial headdress retain substantial original detail. On the reverse the ornate floral wreath remains sharply rendered, with the decorative scrollwork fully visible throughout and central legends are bold and clear. Light circulation friction is evident across the highest points, yet the overall appearance remains crisp and pleasing, with minimal distracting marks.
