*China: Tibet(1904-12) Silver 1/2 Rupee PCGS VF30
A scarce and visually distinctive half-rupee issue of Tibet, displaying the stylised bust characteristic of the series and the intricate floral reverse design that has made Tibetan coinage among the most recognisable of all Asian numismatic issues. Similar to the 1/4 rupee, the 1/2 rupee is encountered far less frequently than the large rupee.
The present specimen is notable for its attractive cabinet appearance, enhanced by deep peripheral toning which frames the design elements and lends considerable character to the piece. The obverse portrait remains boldly outlined, with the facial features, headdress, and decorative robe retaining clear definition despite moderate circulation. The darkened fields create pleasing contrast against the lighter high points, allowing the portrait to stand out prominently. On the reverse, the elaborate floral wreath remains substantially intact, with much of the scrolling foliage and decorative motifs clearly visible around the central Tibetan legends.
Struck during a period when Tibet maintained a distinctive monetary system influenced by the widespread circulation of Indian rupees throughout the Himalayan trade networks, these issues represent an important chapter in the numismatic history of Central Asia. Their unique blend of local artistic traditions and international commercial influences continues to attract collectors worldwide.
