Chinese Cizhou Porcelain Pillow, Song
A Chinese Cizhou porcelain pillow dating from the Song dynasty. The pillow features columns of butterflies and flowers on the top, Qilin heads on the shorter sides, and pair of floral roundels on the longer sides.
Dimensions are: 4 1/2 inches tall X 8 inches wide, 11.4 cm tall X 20.3 cm wide. All measurements are approximate.
Condition: Age appropriate wear and 4 cracks.
Provenance: From Mrs. Fullerton in New Jersey. Her father, Maurice Etangs, was chief of police in Tianjin, China and lived there from 1935 to 1945. These items were collected during that time. A Cizhou ware pillow dating from the Jin dynasty can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 16.156.1 (fig. 1). A carved pillow from Northern Song dynasty was sold at Christie's Hong Kong on October 2, 2017, lot 103.
