Chinese Embroidered Sleeve Panels 19th Century
Colorful, delicate, tightly woven, hand embroidered panels of goldfish and water plants decorating this mirror image pair of sleeve cuffs.
Two narrow embroidered sleeve cuffs have been stitched together to form a rectangular panel. The satin stitch embroidery is minute with much time involved. At one end are flowers and rocks. Towards the other end is a water scene with goldfish and water plants. Large lotus leaves and flowers seem to erupt from the water. Insects and birds fly around seed heads and lotus flowers. The designs are hand embroidered using blue and brown silk threads. The ground is a beige color. The panels are backed by blue cotton with a black silk border.
MEASUREMENTS
23 ¾” (60.3 cm) long x 10 ¼” (26.0 cm) wide Weighs 2.1 oz (60 g)
CONDITION
There is slight staining on the right side of the panel. The silk panels are frayed near the top at the stitched seam and two spots on either side near the top. There might be some fading but they still look very bright for their age.
The goldfish, butterflies and water plants are really fun. The piece is an amazing work of art that is rarely made today because of the expertise and time involved.
