Chinese Enamel Box with Buddhist Treasures, 19th C
Chinese cloisonne enamel box decorated with Buddhist Treasures and lined in wood, 19th century. Cloisonne exterior alternates with applique of coral and/or bone; reference to at least four of the eight Buddhist treasures: endless knot, wheel, shell, possibly a lotus flower in a jar, which may be a combination of the lotus and the treasure vase motif. Also depicted are a pandurate leaf, repeated, and a bamboo stem.
Dimensions are: 2 inches (5.1 cm) tall X 5 1/4 inches (13.3 cm) wide X 3 1/4 inches (8.3 cm) deep. Weight: 367.3 grams. All measurements are approximate.
Condition: Some staining and marking of interior wood base. Affixed to bottom of box is a note - "Very unusual Chinese enameled box 75-00- /524." Faint fragrance detected from wooden interior, unclear whether wood itself or from previous contents.
