Chinese Painting of Birds and Peony

A Chinese watercolor and ink painting dating from the 20th century. The painting depicts two bluebirds on a tree with pink blossoms. There is an inscription and a seal mark, and it is framed.

Provenance: 11 5/8 inches tall X 23 1/8 inches wide; 29.5 cm tall X 58.7 cm wide. All measurements are approximate.

Condition: Foxing and soiling on the left and bottom edge. Not examined out of frame.

Provenance: From the private collection of Dr. and Mrs. Shien Biau Woo (aka S. B. Woo), of Newark, DE. Dr. Woo was born in Shanghai, China and came to the United States as a young man, where he distinguished himself in his studies of mathematics and physics and eventually joined the faculty of the University of Delaware. From 1985 to 1989, Dr. Woo served as the Lieutenant Governor of Delaware, becoming the highest ranking Chinese-Americans at the state level in continental USA in the history of America. He continues to serve as a Professor Emeritus of Physics to the University of Delaware and a proponent of political advocacy for Asian Americans. In recognition of his contribution to the empowerment of Chinese immigrants to the US through his own successes, he is honored in the permanent exhibition in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, in which his portrait hangs and in a museum in the Ningbo city of China where he was born. The Woo collection was assembled in part through many cherished gifts made to Dr. and Mrs. Woo over the course of Dr. Woo’s academic and political career. Dr. and Mrs. Woo are pleased to be able to share the joy they have received from their collection with other collectors as they retire to warmer climes in Florida.
