Chinese Painting of Children on New Year, Republic
A Chinese watercolor and ink on paper painting dating from 1912. The painting depicts a scene of children playing with fireworks for the Chinese New Year. It includes an inscription and a seal and is mounted on backing with a wooden dowel.
Dimensions: 46 1/2 inches tall X 23 5/8 inches wide; 118.1 cm tall X 60 cm wide. All measurements are approximate.
Condition: Spots of creasing.
Provenance: From a collector in Bethesda, Maryland, by descent from his father, who lived overseas in China (Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Taipei) for 25 years and served as an executive for Air America, associated with the Flying Tigers and Civil Air Transport (CAT). He acquired much of his collection during this period and continued collecting from Sotheby's Park Bernet after 1972 when he returned to the United States. Dowel has tag from Sloans and Kenyon.
