Chinese Qing Dynasty Polychrome Wood Reliquary Figure

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 1644 to 1912 CE. A hand-carved wooden reliquary figure of an elderly man who wears distinguishing garments and sits upon an integral circular platform. The figure holds his right hand out as if grasping a cane or staff and places his other hand upon his bent knee. His red robe is lined with black trim bearing petite yellow spots and displays a rectangular pendant just above his somewhat portly belly. His mustachioed face features heavy-lidded eyes beneath thin brows, a crested nose, and tall ears, all beneath a broad courtier's hat. A narrow cavity in the back is meant to hold votive offerings or prayer scrolls and is covered with a rectangular wooden panel. Size: 4.375" W x 9.4" H (11.1 cm x 23.9 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired before 2000

Condition Report: Original right-hand implement missing as shown. Chipping to painted areas, with several stable hairline fissures, and light encrustations within recessed areas, otherwise intact and very good. Nice remains of pigment throughout. Reliquary cavity panel is still present.
