Chinese Silvered Mirror with Birds and Animals

Tang Dynasty, 618-907 AD or later. A bronze octofoil mirror, reverse with central dome, fenghuang and other beasts in relief in the field, each petal ornamented alternately with a bird or plant, silvered. Cf. Los Angeles County Museum of Art, accession number AC1998.251.32, for similar, dated to the Tang Dynasty; cf. The British Museum, museum number 1940,1214.305, for similar, also Tang Dynasty. 870 grams, 19cm (7 1/2"). Property of a London doctor; previously in the collection of her husband by inheritance; formerly acquired during travels in the Far East during the 1920s.
