LOT 0034

Chinese Tang Pottery Attendant Figure, ex-Museum

[ translate ]

East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 906 CE. A beautifully formed terracotta noblewoman tomb attendant, wearing long robes with her arms in large sleeves clasped across her slender abdomen, and atop her head is a tall coiffure. Remains of yellow and white pigment are visible across the figure's face and clothing; finer painted details are now faded. Hundreds of pottery figures like this one were carefully placed in the tombs of high-ranking people during the Tang period; one of the most interesting things about them is that, with their added pigment, they often seem to represent individuals rather than having been mass produced. Size: 1.9" W x 8.8" H (4.8 cm x 22.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to recent increases of shipments being seized by Australian & German customs (even for items with pre-UNESCO provenance), we will no longer ship most antiquities and ancient Chinese art to Australia & Germany. For categories of items that are acceptable to ship to Australia or Germany, please contact us directly or work with your local customs brokerage firm.

#169010
