Title: Chinese Thousand Butterfly Polychrome Porcelain Punchbowl Circa 1910
Size: 16 x 14 x 14

A very heavy, large Chinese porcelain punchbowl with intricate hand-painted butterflies in an intricate design. A large, heavy, hand painted and potted punchbowl with a glazed base that has a raised unglazed foot. The unglazed clay foot ring has been cut and has some grit attached. The glazes are thick and soft feeling, and they have a nice shine. Within the panels on the cavetto and central medallion are masses of colorful butterflies. The rim border matches the butterflies throughout. The outside of the bowl matches the inner panels and rim border. A mark on the base reads MADE IN CHINA in iron red glaze. There are 5 or 6 Chinese characters in black below the red mark, as well. Provenance: From the Ellis Family collection, a well-known Pacific Northwest family. The Ellis' were pioneer settlers to the San Juan Islands in the late 19th century. The collection was purchased in the late 19th and early 20th Century. **Please note that we have or will be listing several other matching and coordinating large bowls, tureens, platters, serving and other dishes soon. Please inquire if you are interested in purchasing one or more pieces together** MEASUREMENTS 11 ¾” (29.8 cm) diameter x 4 ¾” (12.1 cm) tall. Weighs 5 lb 2.8 oz (2345 g) CONDITION There are no breaks, cracks, or chips, and the bowl rings true. There is wear to the gilding on the mouth rim. The central medallion has a band of iron red with one spot lighter than the rest. I believe this is a painting flaw, rather than wear. There is a smudge of iron red not far away on this same ring. There are other kiln flaws, such as black spots and smudges. There is very little wear in the center. The glazes are fresh and bright. A colorful, well painted, large bowl that will show off well from across a room. It is that big. Add it to a collection or for decoration in a room.
