Chinoiserie black lacquered secretary desk. This decorative style evokes Chinese artistic traditions through western craftsmanship, popularized in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. The style is heavily characterized by intricate gilt (gold) illustrations over a dark background. The exterior and interior surfaces are detailed with traditional landscapes, pavilions, mountains, trees, and traditional figures in rich gold paint. The top cabinet doors open to reveal an extensive network of tiny drawers, vertical document slots, and hidden pigeonholes surrounding central fretted latticework doors. The midsection features a pull-down slant lid that folds open to serve as a writing surface, with additional storage tucked inside. The lower section is designed with wide, contoured drawers fitted with traditional brass bail pulls and handles.
