Chupicuaro Polychrome Vessel Geometric Steppe Motifs

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Guanajuato Valley, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A fine pottery vessel presenting thick walls that curve gently inwards then flare out to a circular rim, all sitting upon a round yet stable base. Adorned in hues of maroon, cream, and black, the exterior of this elegant vessel has been skillfully painted with an abstract design of geometric and steppe motifs. A pair of equidistantly spaced drill holes perforate the areas just below the rim, perhaps to accommodate for a lid or allow the vessel to be suspended. Size: 5.8" Diameter x 6.3" H (14.7 cm x 16 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection; ex-Heritage Auctions, New York, USA, 2010 December New York Signature Pre-Columbian Art Auction #6056, December 5th, 2010, lot #56015

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
