Circle of Agostino Tassi, Italian 1578-1644- Mediterranean harbour scene with shipping and a tower; oil on canvas, 94.5 x 141 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Tassi was considered a master of perspective and was revered for his illusionistic depictions of seascapes and harbour scenes. The anonymous hand behind the present work was undoubtedly influenced by Tassi’s paintings, and was certainly operating around the same time. Indeed, Tassi's work was a fundamental source for many artists - including, for example, the famous port scenes of Claude Lorrain (1600-1682) - as well as the for the whole tradition of the ‘capricci’.
