LOT 379

Circle of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, The infant Christ holding an orb

[ translate ]

Property from a Private Collection
Circle of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo
The infant Christ holding an orb

oil on panel
unframed: 87.5 x 61.5 cm.; 34½ x 24½ in.
framed: 106.2 x 79.8 cm.; 41⅞ x 31⅜ in.

Condition Report:
The panel is uncradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish slightly discoloured. There is a distinct network of craquelure which is more defined in certain areas and has become slightly raised, for example in Christ's face, stomach and legs, and in the background to his left, as well as in the faces of the putti and the cloud. There are some vertical splits or cracks in the paint surface running from the upper margin, either side of Christ's head (approx. 4cm. and 20cm. long) and another which runs up from the lower margin through the putto's face (also approx. 20cm.). There are some small losses around all four margins, notably the lower margin. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the thick varnish. Some of the aforementioned areas of raised craquelure have been retouched and there appear to be a couple of strengthenings in the child's eyes and through his hair, as well as in the shadows of his red drapery. There are further retouchings through his legs and around his hand and the orb on the right. There is a more recent retouching in the lower part of the orb (2cm. long) and although it is difficult to discern, the right-hand edge of the painting has probably been retouched. In overall fair condition.

Provenance:
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 11 December 2009, lot 96;

Where acquired by the present owner for £4,375.
